Nice insights, Tom. I also think the industry should move to a shorter announce cycle. Perhaps the NSMB Wii release next week, which was only announced five months ago, will prove that short lead times can still result in huge launches.

Excellent post, Tom!

Bullshots and release delays are just two of several important reasons the Hollywood model would be much better for gaming; another is the damned if you do, damned if you don't situation publications run into when writing a video game preview. Is it fair to developers to critique a game poor based on unfinished code? Is it fair to readers to write a glowing preview of a game that could well be broken by the time it hits shelves? If publishers would simply withhold games until they are truly complete, we could stop asking ourselves either question and have a more accurate idea of what's worth our money.

Oh, totally agreed, Maciek. The reason we (PR people) have to do that, though, is because it's expected -- by media, fans, etc. It's just a cycle that has existed for so long that it's going to be incredibly hard to break.

In an ideal world (we're trying with your projects! hehe) PR and production would work together to ensure that everything is complete. I mean, it's feasible for a game announcement (and associated assets) to be based on a vertical slice. Then a few months later, a few more areas and characters could be done, and you could have a gameplay demo for press. Then as the campaign rolls along, you only release the latest stuff happening in development -- all of your shots could use final-quality assets, the PR people would be happy, and the devs would be happy. But man, in what sort of fairytale world can devs precisely predict when something is going to be ready? :)

Well, Tom, PR people are to blame as well. They usually craft their PR and marketing plans well ahead of the real development without taking into account the simple facts of life. They promise exclusive interviews, special screenshot packs, etc. from game which is halfway done. When that happens and the game is simply unplayable at that moment (because devs are redoing some important stuff), the power of Photoshop to rescue! And we end up with screenshots that don't resemble the final game at all.

But this is not as damaging as PR people taking some work in progress shots themselves and releasing them just to fit some schedule. And then you see the ugly screens from you beloved games for years and your eyes bleed.

Actually I don't know what is more damaging to game's reputation - bullshots or carefully rationed yet truthful screenshots? I remember Myst series of games where each new screenshot was an event celebrated by fans and they could do their PR with literally several screenshots before the games' release.
